I shared this post on my blog, Style & Sucré, on Monday, but figured that it might be helpful to my Posh readers as well. Hope you enjoy!
When the season changes, there’s a lot of beauty talk about the latest trends, the lip colors you must buy, the limited edition collections you can’t pass up. But one of the first things I do when the seasons change is change up my basics. This Summer, especially since I moved to New Orleans, I went bare-faced a lot because with the heat and the oily skin, some days I just couldn’t fathom putting another layer on my face. Now that it has cooled down, I’m ready to pull my foundations and concealers back out. Here’s what I’ll be wearing this Fall…
Concealer :: As you can see, I’m still loving Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer. I have it in Golden (a touch lighter than my skin) and Almond (matches my skin exactly). I also use BB’s Touch-Up Stick for quick blemish covering. I recently discovered, and subsequently fell in love with, the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (I wear Café) and it’s now my favorite under-eye concealer. While the BB concealer provides excellent coverage and staying power, the NARS concealer brightens up my under-eye area like no other. It’s also easier to use. I just dab a little under each eye and blend it out with my ring finger. And since the weather is cooling down, I don’t have to worry about the radiance factor.
Tinted Moisturizer :: I wear Laura Mercier’s Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer (in Walnut) at least 3 times per week. I love it because it gives more coverage than most TM’s, but it still looks natural. It’s also SPF 20 which means I can remove sunscreen from my skincare routine that morning. I also have a new TM that I’m loving: Becca Luminous Skin Colour Ultra-Sheer Foundation SPF25 (I wear Mink, but I also want to try Cognac). Even though this product is technically foundation, I put it in the TM category because it’s sooo sheer. It’s perfect for really good skin days (which I’ve been having more of thanks to my stellar skincare routine), but it’s also great to wear with my Tom Ford Foundation Stick. You can wear this product alone when you want a natural, but glowy face or add a stick/compact foundation on top of it (in trouble areas) when you need a little more coverage. Because it’s a luminous product, I’ve been saving it for the Fall and Winter when I need a little more glow, but don’t have to work as hard to battle the shine.
Stick/Compact Foundation :: The Tom Ford Foundation Stick is back on my vanity! I’ve mentioned this foundation before and it’s still one of my Fall/Winter favorites. Yes, it’s expensive, but for me, every TF product I’ve purchased has lived up to it’s price tag. If you want to try a less-expensive foundation stick, Bobbi Brown’s is an old favorite and comes in tons of shades. I love this stick alone, but I also use it a lot with some of my sheer foundations and tinted moisturizers, including the TF Traceless Foundation. In this category, I’m also a huge fan of the NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation (I wear Macao). I was nervous that it would be way too well, radiant, for my skin, but it’s absolutely gorgeous. It gives my skin a glow, but not too much. And even though I was worried that it would be too heavy (this is the first compact foundation I’ve ever tried), it looks so natural. And don’t forget the compact. It’s so easy to carry around in case I need to do any touch-ups throughout the day.
Liquid Foundation :: Something about cool weather makes me want to do a full-on face. And my NARS Sheer Matte Foundation (in Macao) is perfect for that. A major complaint I have with matte foundations is that they can look chalky and unnatural, especially on dark skin. I’m so happy I found this foundation because I never have that problem. It’s definitely matte and stays matte all day, but I still feel like it looks like my skin and allows for just the right amount of glow to shine through (as seen in the photo above). In fact, Sam complains every time he sees me putting on makeup, but whenever I wear this foundation he gushes about how beautiful I look. (Ladies, it’s all about finding products that trick your man into thinking you’re barely wearing anything!) In my opinion, this foundation should be on everyone’s must-have list for Fall, especially if you have combination/oily skin.
Powder :: As someone who battles t-zone shine, I could not live without powder. Right after I finish my base (foundation/TM/concealer), I do a light dusting of powder all over my face. Then I go back, usually with a smaller powder brush, and do another dusting along my forehead and nose. And I never leave the house without one of my powder compacts and blotting papers. I have been using the Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Pressed Powder (in Golden Orange) exclusively for about a year. The color instantly brightens my skin tone and it doesn’t leave an ashy or cakey finish. I love the loose powder version too. Just last week, however, I picked up the first powder I ever loved: Mac’s Blot Pressed Powder (in Deep Dark). I think I broke the last one I had and forgot to repurchase it, but this is really one of my favorites. I don’t usually wear MAC’s face products because I don’t think they use the best ingredients (and I find that a lot of their foundations — especially the darker shades — are too orange. am I alone in this?), but I’ve never had an adverse reaction to this one.
Wow that was a lot! I’m overly passionate when it comes to beauty, so please forgive my long-windedness (if that’s even a word)! I hope that you found this helpful and feel ready to transition your base makeup routine to Fall. I’ll be sharing more of my beauty picks for the season, as well as a peek into my makeup bag, in the coming weeks. Until then, please let me know how you like to wear your makeup in the Fall!
