I attended my first New York Fashion Week show yesterday morning and there are no words for how exciting it was. I’ve been waiting for that moment for years and it was everything that I expected and more. I have to be honest though, Fashion Week, and really New York City in general, has a way of making me want to starve myself to fit into the clothes that I’m lusting over. Whether it’s a model on the runway or a fashion editor in the front row, it seems like being super skinny has become a requirement of the fashion world. But, in my Carrie Bradshaw voice, I can’t help but wonder…who the hell made that rule up anyway?
Fashion is about taking the latest trends and working them into your own style. The clothes are beautiful, but they’re nothing until some fabulous girl turns them into a “look.” And honestly, how fabulous can you be at 100 pounds? This Tommy Hilfiger model is gorgeous, but when I look at this picture, all I see are her protruding shoulders and boney knees. In my opinion, she’s not working this look, it’s working her.
Being stylish begins with you, and you simply cannot look or feel your best if you’re unhealthy. That doesn’t mean that you should throw caution to the wind and eat everything in sight and it certainly doesn’t mean that you should cut out everything except for raw almonds and kale from your diet either. Find the perfect balance for you and settle comfortably into your skin. Because confidence is the only requirement of true style.
