Designer Day:: Carolina Herrera

“I love the idea of elegance and intricacy, but whether it is in a piece of clothing or a fragrance, the intricacy must appear as simplicity.I think that standard has served me well; women seem to love my clothes. I am extremely grateful for the success that they have given me.”

The Background:: Born in 1939 in Caracas, Venezuela, Ms. Herrera descends from a long line of Venezuelan landowners and statesmen. She speaks so affectionately of her upbringing, saying that her Father was a man of extremely dashing looks, while her mother was, “very strict, but not in a loud way. There was a time and place for everything. I have carried that with me all my life.” Growing up with renowned beauty set her high on the list of international socialites, being named one of the best dressed Women in the world during the 1970′s and 80′s and spending days with royals and running around with the likes of Andy Warhol and his group. After creating her first collection in 1980 to positive reactions, she moved with her family to New York in 1981 and formed Carolina Herrera, Ltd.

Having grown up in a world where women wore only couture, (She attended her first couture show at just age 13 with her grandmother!) she had a certain air of class, dignity and beauty that she brought to her collection, and it kept her in extreme high demand. In 1988, Herrera expanded to launch her first fragrance for Women, and in 1991 she launched her first cologne. She oversees an international design firm that encompasses her signature fashion collection, fragrances, cosmetics, accessories and bridal collection. She is married to Reinaldo Herrera, and she has four beautiful daughters.

The Reason We Love Her:: Strength, class and beauty are three words we would use to describe Carolina Herrera, and they are three words that we use to describe the POSH woman. She understands just the kind of designer she has always wanted to be, and that assurance and clarification in her ability to brand herself and her clothing is an admirable trait.

The Line:: Under her eponymous collection, Carolina Herrera New York, she creates stunning bridal gowns, eyewear, and women’s clothing. Under her second brand, CH Carolina Herrera, she creates accessories, shoes, men’s, women’s and childrens and fragrances, including the popular 212 fragrance for men and women.

“With my clothing and fragrances,” says Herrera, “I believe that it is best to be realistic, but to always mix a bit of fantasy with reality. It’s the same with life, really.”

 The Current Season Favorites::

First off, how fun are those hats? Don’t they just make you want to frolick through Ibeza with a glass of wine and a lover? We love them. Secondly, the color pallet for this collection is just breath taking. Carolina Herrera explained that this collection was inspired by two things: The traditional clothes of Korea, which helps explain those amazing hats that are traditionally worn by Korean men, and the botanical plates collected in the eighteenth century, which explains the gorgeous floral motif that is seen throughout the collection.

What’s To Come:: Fall/Winter’11-

We love that she says she designed the collection for the everyday woman who just wants to be chic. It’s so simply put, but it’s paints the perfect image of the kind of women that we should strive to be: be true to yourself and your likes, but always keep it undoubtedly chic. We love the color pallet of darks with a pop of red, those beautiful sequins and that stunning fur! Perfection!
